6 SIMPLE TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR GRASS GREEN DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS

6 SIMPLE TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR GRASS GREEN DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS - GuanoBoost

It is ironic, that the very time when you want your lawn to look green, i.e. the summer months,  if you don’t have the correct lawn care strategy, it’s possible to see your turf turn an unattractive shade of brown once the summer heat hits. Now this you want to avoid.
WANT GUANOBOOST?

Experts at GuanoBoost will tell you that this is a totally natural process. Many varieties of grass go dormant over the summer months, this is a self-preservation strategy, the grass enters into a state of hibernation to preserve vital energy. Once the cooler temperatures and higher precipitation of autumn returns, your brown lawn will return to a beautiful shade of green.

However, with the right lawn care protocol, you can buck this trend and ensure that you have a vibrant, green lawn all summer, so you are in great shape for that annual family BBQ!

Ok, so the following 6 simple tips will ensure that your lawn stays green all summer long by practicing the following techniques:

1 – MOW HIGHER DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.

The ideal height to grow your grass varies on the grass variety, but in the summer months you should raise your lawnmower height setting. Taller blades provide more shade for your lawn’s root system, which keeps it cooler during hot summer days.

Additionally, taller blades of grass result in deeper, stronger roots. Here is a good guide:

  • Warm-Season Grasses
  • Bahia: 2.5 to 4 inches
  • Bermuda: 0.5 to 2.5 inches
  • Buffalo: 1.5 to 4 inches
  • Centipede: 1 to 2.5 inches
  • Kikuyu grass: 1 to 1.5 inches
  • St. Augustine: 1 to 3 inches
  • Zoysia: 0.5 to 3 inches

2 – DEEP, REGULAR WATERING.

If you want a green lawn all summer long, you must water consistently and deeply. Your lawn needs at least 1”-1 ½” of water per week, year-round, during the winter, too.

Water deeply 2-3 times per week, rather than daily.Rather than shallow watering every day, water your lawn deeply once or twice a week. One to one-and-a-half inches of water a week will keep your lawn green.  If you can’t push a 6” screwdriver into your lawn, you’re not watering enough. Most home irrigation systems can be pre-programmed to take care of the watering for you.

3 – WATER EARLY IN THE DAY.

The absolute best time to water your lawn is the early morning, before 10AM, and ideally even earlier. Cooler temperatures and calm breezes help keep evaporation to a minimum. And watering in the morning keeps the turf cooler during the hot parts of the day, which means less stress on the grass. Program your irrigation systems to water early in the morning, so your lawn will have enough time to dry out during the day, thereby preventing fungal diseases.

One thing you must not do is water your grass after 6pm, becase a wet lawn at night is the perfect condition for fungus to grow. Along with cutting the lawn too short, watering a lawn at night is about the worst thing you can do to it.

4 – HAVING A SHARP BLADE ON YOUR MOWER.

A poorly maintained and blunt mower will only harm your turf. Good mower maintenance includes sharpening the blades and changing the oil, filter and spark plugs.  Dull mower blades will tear not cut your lawn, leaving brown tips on the grass blades.

To maintain a sharp blade, avoid mowing over any stones as much as possible, making sure to sharpen and balance your blade ideally 2 times a year. Naturally, this is something you need to do carefully and follow a safe protocol.

5 – REPAIR SPOTS CAUSED BY PET WASTE.

Leaving your best friends business on the lawn has the effect of of over fertilizing the lawn in one specific spot, that is why you see brown spots often appearing.

There are several tools for doing the poop cleanup job. Dog Poop Rakes

that scoop up the litter and allow you to shovel it into a container, trash bag, or whatever are out there. There are contraptions that have jaws that open and close like an excavator to grab the poop so you can throw it out.

This jaw poop scoop works well in the grass. There are also shovel-like scoops and litter pans for catching the poop as you scoop it. Most of these tools are all designed to minimise the amount of bending you’ll have to do in order to clean up after your dog.

6 – APPLY ORGANIC FERTILISER.

The general rule of thumb landscaping contractors recommend is to fertilize your lawn every six weeks.

Why use natural fertilizers instead of synthetic lawn fertilizers? Because they are better for your grass, the environment, and they are proven to work better than synthetics and in the case of GuanoBoost, the all-important nitrogen Levels are FAR HIGHER. This is because it is made from 100% Guano Bird Fertilizer. Seabird Guano is one of the best organic fertilizers in the world today.

The seabird guano used in GuanoBoosts products is sourced sustainably using environmentally friendly methods from Namibian Islands.  GuanoBoosts is produced locally in South Africa and contains 100 % natural ingredients and will give your lawn the boost it requires to stay green all summer.

How to revive a brown lawn is one of the most common questions we get asked. Unfortunately, if your lawn is already looking like coconut matting, there’s not much you can do to bring the greenback before fall, once a lawn has gone brown, overwatering will only stress out the turf. To prevent this frustrating situation, follow the lawn maintenance tips listed above to keep your grass green during the summer months.
